A Generational Memoir

"Neither the life of an individual nor the history of a society can be understood without understanding both."

I love memoirs, whether coming from famous people or folks generally unknown.  My goal is to write one about myself and my remarkable parents, especially Dad.   My father was raised in poverty by his great-grandmother.  By the time he was 31 he and my mom had bought their first small-town newspaper, one that was about to fail, brought it back to life, then to thriving while raising 2 children together.  Michael and I were both products of this, for better, mostly.

Too much of history is the “Great Man” story, that matters, but it is nothing without the personal stories.   When Dad was 91, I sat him down to record 15 videos about small town newspapers in midcentury in the midwest.

He was shy about it, “I have nothing to say” but once he got started what happened was magic.  So glad I did it.  So upset that I didn’t get him to record the WWII experiences that I remember.  A cautionary tale for you all, get everything down.
My father was a great man, born into nothing, who wasn’t famous or wealthy, but the backbone of the country.   I weave in my own story, with Mom’s. Learn More

This section is a place for me to write the book I have in mind in increments, making sure that I actually do it.  It’s our story, but comments are very welcome, encouraged
